the unlikeable heroine
This is a poem I wrote years ago, when I was just starting to come into my feminism. For me, the unlikeable heroine now represents more than just a single entity- she is the marginalized, the minorities, the voices that are too often hushed.
The Unlikeable Heroine
She’s sitting there across the way, they start to realize
She’s knows more than a thing or two, and proves more when she tries,
Somehow when she adds two and two, it always equals sin
Such is the lot in life of the Unlikeable Heroine
No one knows where she will go, fewer why she stays
They claim this independence “thing” is no more than a phase,
But tight-lipped smiles can scarce conceal their patience stretching thin
She’s wearing out her welcome, the Unlikeable Heroine
Her lack of inhibitions seem to have a certain charm;
She has a sense of honesty that brutally disarms,
But there’s no hiding scrapes and scars, the maps of where she’s been
The road less traveled beckons the Unlikeable Heroine
Time passes time, and she becomes a sore anomaly;
She’s soon only regarded with solemn severity
Yet as she walks through mocking crowds, she highly holds her chin
No one can strip the pride from the Unlikeable Heroine
The ante must be upped, see as the insults start anew
They catcall, leer and finger point, all methods tried and true
Why bother fight a battle that’s impossible to win?
Such questions are ignored by the Unlikeable Heroine
The mobs have started gathering, the traps are set and laid
They’ll rob her of all self-respect, but offer up a trade,
She’ll find her rightful place if she’ll only just give in
The gains outweigh the loss of the Unlikeable Heroine
There’s so much that she wants to share, talents to put to use
But each attempt to triumph’s only met with worse abuse,
She promises to them that she will not return again
And promises are kept by the Unlikeable Heroine
She’s finally gone, they got their wish, there’s no sign she was here
There were too many rules to which she never could adhere,
Somehow the world must struggle on, the yang without its yin
Until the great rebirth of the Unlikeable Heroine
